Not sure if I would characterize Mel as a fictional character. The Internet tracked him down to be a Mel Kaye from Librascope Inc, and (a version of) the blackjack program has actually been found. The famous epic about him has been fluffed up a bit, but I don't think that qualifies Mel as fictional.
